Remainder of Spring Semester Delivered Online

To limit the potential exposure and spread of COVID-19, Redlands Community College will continue teaching all courses online for the remainder of the Spring semester. All events and activities are canceled, including the graduation and nurse pinning ceremonies scheduled for May 8, and student housing will close effective 5 p.m. Friday, March 27.

The college will remain open by appointment only with limited staffing until further notice. Offices and services will be open during regular business hours, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but staff will be available to meet with individuals by appointment. Fall enrollment opens next month, but the Admissions and Advising staff is prepared to help students enroll virtually, by phone or in person by appointment.

“This has been a very difficult time, but our faculty and students have responded well to the challenges,” said Redlands President Jack Bryant. “The majority of our faculty has had extensive training to be effective online instructors, so while this is not the situation in which we’d prefer to teach even more creatively, our instructors are prepared.”

For the past two years, the college administration has been evaluating online course instruction and providing professional development opportunities in online teaching for both full-time and part-time faculty. Last year, faculty and staff worked with ABLE Tech to ensure that syllabi and online teaching tools met accessibility standards.

According to Chief Academic and Compliance Officer Rose Marie Moore, faculty who were teaching live classes prior to Spring Break are using various tools, including Canvas and remote conferencing software such as Zoom, to communicate assignments and provide instruction through video.

“Spring Break gave me some time to become comfortable with using Zoom to teach,” said science instructor Dee McKenna. “We picked right back up Monday morning, and it was a great experience. Our students are accustomed to using technology in so many different ways that they easily embraced the new format.”
