JOSÉ MOLINA NEGRON NAMED INTERIM MEN’S BASKETBALL COACH

EL RENO, Okla. — José Molina Negron has been named interim men’s basketball coach at Redlands Community College. He joined Redlands in 2015 as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the women’s basketball team.

A native of Puerto Rico, Molina began his coaching career with Montañeritas Basketball Club and, during his seven seasons there, managed a team that had never been in the playoffs to two Final Four and one National Final. From 2008 to 2011, Molina began as assistant coach for the Morovis Montañeras, a Puerto Rico women’s professional team, and was eventually named interim head coach of the team which participated in the Final Four in every season, achieving three BSNF Final appearances and the 2009 Championship. Molina’s record as interim head coach in 2009 was 10-1, earning him the honor of being the head coach in the All-Star game.

From 2011 to 2015, he was head women's basketball coach at the University of Puerto Rico (Arecibo Campus), improving the ranking of the program from 18th to 9th in the Puerto Rico College League.

“I am very grateful for this opportunity to serve as head coach of the men’s team and am committed to ensuring that our young men represent Redlands well,” Molina said. “Thank you to President Bryant, Women’s Coach Jay Niehues and Athletic Director Eli Zucksworth for demonstrating the confidence they have in me.”

With 15 on the roster, Molina is impressed with the talent on the team and has high expectations on the court and in the classroom. He believes the Redlands men’s basketball team has players with a variety of skills which should lead to a very competitive season.

“Redlands Community College is excited to have Jose as the head men’s basketball coach. He brings a great deal of experience,” said Eli Zucksworth, Redlands athletic director. “Jose will be a valuable asset to Redlands Athletics, and we are looking forward to working with him.”

The pre-season schedule tips off at home 5 p.m. Nov. 2 against Bacone JV, followed by a trip to Great Bend, Kans., Nov. 3 to play Washburn JV. For the complete schedule, visit the Athletics tab of the Redlands' website.
