REDLANDS STUDENT PARTICIPATES IN NIGH LEADERSHIP ACADEMY

EL RENO, Okla. — Tyler McKenzie, a pre-professional sciences major at Redlands Community College, represented the college at the 2018 George and Donna Nigh Leadership Scholarship Academy.

"I thought the experience was overall an amazing learning opportunity to witness the steps towards becoming a better leader,” McKenzie said. “I created a variety of relationships and bonds that I will use for a lifetime, and I am so grateful to have had the chance to meet so many wonderful people."

One student from each of Oklahoma’s higher education institutions is selected to participate each year, and must have demonstrated strong leadership qualities, high academic achievement, strong community involvement, and have graduated from an Oklahoma high school. Participants also receive a $1,000 scholarship.

“Tyler is an all-around, outstanding student,” said Redlands President Jack Bryant. “He is such a leader in the classroom and around campus, and I am proud to have him represent Redlands Community College.”

With the theme “You Can Do It from Here,” this year’s academy encouraged participants to stay focused on their goals and not allow challenges from their past to deter them in the future.

McKenzie, a Mustang graduate, enjoyed visiting sites around Oklahoma City, such as the Devon Tower and Tinker Air Force Base, and attending events like a Thunder basketball game and a Club 29 Rotary meeting. A highlight for McKenzie was the opportunity to learn from leaders such as the Honorable George Nigh, Judge Vicki Miles-LaGrange and CEOs from major corporations based in Oklahoma, including Express Ranches, Devon, and Paycom.

McKenzie was provided professional attire for the event with contributions from Redlands Community College Foundation and Pinpoint Resource Fine Wear and alterations donated by Moe Moghbel of Bridal Maison.
