Redlands Women’s Golf Team scores first win of the season

Redlands Cougar Women’s Golf won the Sugar Tree Invitational hosted by University of Texas at Brownsville and Western Texas College Golf teams on March 16 -17 at Sugar Tree Gold Course in Lipan Texas. The Redlands team finished Round 1 with a score of 302 and Round 2 with a score of 307. The team finished 36 strokes ahead of the second place University of Houston-Victoria team.

President Jack Bryant stated, “It is very impressive for four of our Lady Cougars to place in the top five positions in the tournament. Coach Kaelin and her team are to be commended on their dedication, drive and determination. They represented our institution in an exemplary manner.”

Ivon Reijers of Barcelona, Spain finished first place with a final score of 145. Micheala Osborne of Lawton was third with a score of 153. Kaylee Neff of Yukon was fourth with a score of 155. Shelby Humbryd of Bixby tied for fifth with a score of 156.

According to Redlands Golf Coach, Andrea Kaelin, “This was a great win for us. I am so proud of the way the team came together and the way they played for each other. Sugar Tree is a tough golf course with narrow fairways and greens we weren’t used to. We hit the ball extremely well and were able to manage the course with smart and selfless decisions. It was a proud moment for all of us, and its encouraging for us going into post season competition.”

The team’s next event will be in Grand Prairie, Texas and is hosted by Dallas Baptist University.

Dean of Student Affairs and Athletics Director, Matt Newgent said, “I’m extremely proud of Coach Kaelin and the team, after overcoming the early adversity with the weather and the inability to get outside and practice to win the Sugar Tree Invitational is quite an accomplishment.”
