Dr. Rachel Bates

Dr. Rachel Bates joined Redlands Community College as a Professor in the Mathematics Department in the fall of 2011 where she teaches various undergraduate mathematics courses. Professor Bates received her B.S. and Master’s Degree in Mathematics from Wichita State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma. Dr. Bates’ dissertation research focused on problem based learning in undergraduate mathematics.

Professor Bates’ teaching interests include all levels of mathematics and statistics. She has developed new mathematics courses while at Redlands Community College in an effort to provide mathematics options for all students. Dr. Bates’ primary research interests are in the fields of mathematics pedagogy in higher education, quantitative reasoning and teaching mathematics for social justice. Specifically, she is interested in student-centered pedagogies, and alternative higher education mathematics curricula.

Dr. Bates is involved in multiple academic committees, and is the faculty sponsor of Redlands Community College’s Mu Alpha Theta chapter. Dr. Bates has mentored multiple students through Honor’s projects and research. Dr. Bates is an active member of Mathematical Association of America (MAA), American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC), Research Council on Mathematics Learning (RCML), Oklahoma Council of Teachers of Mathematics (OCTM), National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and is a current MAA Section NeXT Fellow. Dr. Bates regularly attends and presents at regional and national mathematics conferences.
