Redlands Academic Team is going to nationals

El Reno, Okla. - - Redlands Community College Academic A team placed first and secured a spot at nationals during the  Jan. 25 , 2014 Community College Sectional Championship Tournament. This is the third year in a row for the academic team to make it to nationals.

Redlands three teams competed alongside 62 other teams across the nation in eight different locations. Redlands hosted the event which was attended by community colleges across our state competing for one of 24  spots at nationals.

The winning Redlands A team consisted of sophomore, Tracey Hickman, freshman, Mary Jordon and sophomore, Matthew Koster. Hickman placed first individual overall with  the B team captain ,Dylan Olson placing second overall individual.

In a discussion of the team and his accomplishments, Tracey Hickman, sophomore at Redlands Community College, said, "This team has worked hard from day one, and we would be no where without the backing of the administration, faculty and community of Redlands and the surrounding area. Without help funding and the emotional support, we would be unable to accomplish the accolades or even attend half the tournaments we do. We hope that this support continues as we continue to strive toward our goal of bringing a national title to Redlands Community College!"

All teams played 14 matches involving trivia questions covering anything in the college curriculum; literature, math, composers, geography, all sciences, art, economics, philosophy, religion, government, current events and pop culture.

The Redlands Community College Academic Team will be heading to Atlanta, Ga. for nationals Feb.28-March 1. The winner of the Community College Championship Tournament will be named the best community college quiz bowl team in North America.

Cherry Rain, Liberal Arts Professor and Academic Team Coach, said, "I am very happy to be taking the Redlands team to nationals. We have more on the team than ever before with varying degrees of quiz bowl experience. They are all dedicated to the team, working well together and practicing hard for Atlanta. I know they will do Redlands and Oklahoma proud!"
