Redlands Upward Bound Program

MISSION

Redlands Community College TRiO Upward Bound is an intensive, year-round, college preparatory program. Our mission is to assist low-income, first-generation, college bound, high school students in attaining the necessary skills to achieve college admission and completion of their baccalaureate degree. Redlands TRiO Upward Bound prepares students academically, culturally, and socially to succeed at the post-secondary level.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves: high school students from low-income families; and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.

NON-RESIDENTIAL SUMMER PROGRAM

Redlands TRiO Upward Bound operates a mandatory six-week "non-residential" academic program on our campus during the months of June and July. Participants receive a comprehensive program of rigorous instruction in math, laboratory science, composition, literature, foreign language, study skills, critical thinking, and computer literacy. Students also participate in social/cultural events and college campus tours.

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY

To be considered for Redlands TRiO Upward Bound, students must meet the following criteria:

  • A student must be enrolled at one of the following High Schools: Calumet, Geary, El Reno, Hinton, Minco, Union City, or Etta Dale Jr. High School. Students must have completed the 8th grade. Most participants join during the 9th and 10th grade and continue with the program through their high school graduation and entry into college.
  • A student must be a member of a family in which neither parent/guardian has earned a bachelor's degree or a family whose taxable income does not exceed the level established by the U.S. Department of Education.
