2016 1098-T Tax Forms Available by January 31, 2017

Students will receive log-in information in the mail or via email between January 24 and 31. The website to log in is https://www.1098T.com/. Students who do not receive their log-in information by February 5 should verify their address information on the my.REDLANDScc portal, or with Registrar’s Office to make sure Redlands has the correct address on file. Students who have incorrect address information on file can either update their information on my.REDLANDScc under the Student Dashboard, or contact the Registrar’s Office. The Registrar’s Office can be reached at 405.422.6238. Secondly, students should visit the 1098-T instructions page at https://www.1098t.com/info/instructions/instructions_ayr.asp to learn the steps needed to access their tax information online.

1098T Tax Law dictates that institutions provide information based on EITHER amount BILLED (in box 2 of the 1098 form) or amount PAID (in box 1 of the 1098 form) during the 2013 tax calendar year (January 1 – December 31). Redlands chooses to use the amount BILLED during the calendar year. The reason is because students often pre-enroll in one calendar year and pay for those courses in which they pre-enrolled in another calendar year; it is more accurate to track billed amounts tied to the time of enrollment. The requirement for reporting by amount PAID goes into mandatory enforcement for the 2017 tax year; this tax year 2016 will be the last year Redlands uses amount BILLED.

Box 2 of the Hope 1098-T form is for ‘Qualified Tuition and Fees’ and is calculated by the amount of tuition and fees BILLED during the 2016 calendar year. If a student pre-enrolled prior to January 1, 2016, then the amount billed for Spring 2016 was probably included in the 2015 Hope 1098-T data. In other words, the billing date for the Spring 2016 courses taken occurred in November or December 2015 and was included in the 2015 1098-T information and will not appear as part of the 1098-T information for 2016.

The same situation applies to the Spring 2017 amounts. If Box 6 is checked on the 2016 Hope 1098-T form, then the Spring 2017 ‘qualified tuition and fees’ may have already been billed due to pre-enrollment and are included in the 2016 information and will not be on the 2017 Hope 1098-T form.

If you have questions about amounts on the 1098-T, you should email the Business Office at Business.Office@redlandscc.edu with the subject line ‘1098T question’. Due to the need for security of confidential information, the email request must come from your Redlands email account. Please allow 3 – 4 business days for an email response.
