Redlands Community College Monthly Wrap-Up: November 2016

  • STEM Students Present at Conference: Redlands STEM students Rhonda Weigand and Danielle Stewart presented their summer research projects at the Oklahoma Academy of Science on Nov. 4, 2016, at the Oklahoma State University Health Sciences Center in Tulsa. Weigand presented her research project from her internship at NASA Ames, Mountain View, Calif. Her research topic was focused on modifying the current rodent habitat for the International Space Station. Stewart presented her research project from her internship at the USDA in El Reno. Her research focused on the study of land use and reservoir sedimentation in Oklahoma.

  • Annual Cougar Invitational Attracts Bright Minds: Redlands Community College hosted its sixth Annual Cougar Invitational High School National Academic Quiz Tournament on Nov. 5, 2016. Sixteen teams competed to be the best and win an invitation to Nationals in Atlanta, Georgia, in May 2017. The teams were from Norman, Norman North, Edmond Memorial, Edmond North, Edmond Santa Fe, Enid, Anadarko, and Cistercian, whose team commuted all the way from Irving, Texas, to participate. Through lightning-fast buzzer races and brilliant responses, the following five teams earned their way to nationals in several divisions: Norman North, Cistercian, Edmond Memorial, Norman and Anadarko.

  • Growing Community: Redlands Community College offered its first, one-day aquaponic certificate class on Nov. 5, 2016. The course was open to the public and was presented by Redlands faculty – Julie Flegal-Smallwood, Dee McKenna and Larry Kirschner – in conjunction with Symbiotic Aquaponic, a nationally-recognized, Oklahoma-based aquaponics company. Thirty-six participants from Oklahoma and Texas experienced hands-on instruction in the recently renovated Redlands GrowHouse along with classroom discussion.

  • Nationally Recognized for Excellence: The Redlands Community College Paramedic Program was recognized in November by the Community for Accredited Online Schools as one of the best online paramedic programs offered across the country. The Community for Accredited Online Schools is a comprehensive accreditation resource that provides prospective students and families with the tools needed to make well-informed decisions about their education.
